GS1 barcodes or internal barcodes? Choosing the right one for your labels

The difference between GS1-based barcodes and internal in-house codes, and how CAIS Labels keeps the two separate.

Two kinds of barcode

A GS1 barcode uses a company prefix that your business licenses from GS1 (in Canada, through GS1 Canada). It identifies your product uniquely, which is what retailers and distributors usually expect. An internal barcode is a code you make up for use inside your own shop or system. It scans the same way but is not a registered identifier.

When internal codes are enough

If labels are only scanned at your own counter or in your own inventory process, an internal code may do the job. If product goes to another retailer, ask them what they require before printing, since many will expect a GS1 identifier.

How CAIS Labels handles both

CAIS Labels can generate GS1-based barcodes from your registered company prefix and item number, generate internal codes without a GS1 prefix, or accept a code you enter manually with check-digit validation. The two are kept clearly separate in the app so an internal code is never presented as a GS1 one.

Leave room around the barcode

Scanners need blank space on either side of the bars. When placing a barcode on a custom template, keep it clear of borders and other text, and test-scan a printed label on your own stock and printer.
